Oil Painting

Houston based painter, Lee E. Wright, has been painting and drawing as long as he can remember. At a young age, he drew images from encyclopedias found in his childhood house. Drawing and painting became a meditative form of relaxation, which Wright has continued to draw upon. Wright has exhibited in the US and abroad including Tokyo, Bogota, Colombia, Los Angeles and many venues in Houston. His work is included in many public and private collections including the George H. W. Bush Library collection. He has been interviewed and reviewed in many publications including {E-Volved} Magazine and The Houston Press. Wright has participated and been short-listed in many juried art competitions including The Hunting Art Prize (2012, 2013, and 2014). Wright currently lives and works in Houston, Texas.

Artist Statement
The more I paint the more I delve into the shadows of my memory. The paintbrush allows me to conjure feelings and past experience in order to record my turbulent youth through a lens of beauty. While using my feelings and memories to create, I am taking the techniques and processes I used in the past and pushing them forward into a style and message that is unique to me. I like to consider myself on the forefront of a new art movement that values beauty and form, an anti-anti aesthetic movement. I strive to draw the viewer to my images with surface beauty or innocence, but I want the viewer to linger and see the hidden nuances and ponder the meaning behind the beauty, which is typically a much darker view. The eyes of my subjects reveal the pain and complexity of life that is hidden by the surface beauty.
