Originally from Michigan, Jill Hakala completed her BFA at Michigan State University. During her final year at MSU she created paintings in which she combined the science with the abstract; using cellular structures juxtaposed with broad, atmospheric imagery. This has become a constant theme in her work; illustrating relationships that we have with each other, and with ourselves. She experiments with mixed media, frequently adding fibers into her paintings. She relocated to Houston in 2014 and started showing her work in group exhibitions around the city. Ms. Hakala joined the Hardy and Nance Studios as an artist in residence in May of 2017.
