Inside and Out: New Works From JP Hartman and Autumn Smith
The aesthetics of the art made by JP Hartman and Autumn Smith both explore issues of social justice through a lens of personal experience with differing, but complementary focuses.
Smith’s art tends to focus on subjects of feminism and reproductive justice as well as responsibility for curbing the spread of white supremacist ideals, whereas Hartman’s art mainly centers on current events, specifically those surrounding immigration and racial equality.
Smith’s work is meant more to express her inner thoughts and feelings and everyday experiences as a woman, and the subjects of Hartman’s art tends to focus on external issues and problems, but seen from the perspective of a Third Culture Kid, a Panamanian-American who is deeply concerned about issues affecting Latinos at the Texas-Mexico border.
Together, they explore both the inner and outer aspects of social justice and reproductive rights in Texas.
